Frequently asked questions
1Can you tell us a bit about Ekpa & Co Oy?
Ekpa & Co Oy is a prominent law firm specializing primarily in immigration laws. Additionally we also provide expert translation and consultation services in other legal areas as well.
2Where are you located?
Our offices are based in Lahti Finland. We believe that Location is not as important as the quality of the legal advice you are given. You should be aware that a very good law firm has the necessary policies and experience to remotely handle your case either based on a primary visit or no visit at all. There are many law firms that conduct businesses solely through phone and email.
3Can you give us a brief idea of the kind of services you offer?
We primarily offer legal advice pertaining to the immigration to Finland/EU. Additionally we also provide expert services in the following areas as well: Criminal case, family and child rights, litigation, translation services and other legal consultations. We are proud to say that we have some really reputed criminal lawyers and immigration lawyers as our partners.
4What makes you better than the other law firms around?
Good question! Firstly, we are extremely good at what we do.. We have never lost a client. All of them come back to us again and again. Over the years our colorful portfolio has grown to include a long line of satisfied clients who have approached us for consultation. We are as immensely proud of them as they are of us. Secondly, we have never a lost a case due to shoddy work. We are very sincere in our work. We firmly believe that every individual has a right to justice and we try our best to get it for them. This honesty is very evident in our research and our representation. This is reason why we have never lost a case due to shoddy work. Thirdly, we are not looking for a good sales pitch with our work. We truly care for our clients and are concerned about what happens to them. We never settle for the middle ground when it comes to our clients. We also never compromise on our integrity or our high standards just to make money. We do not overcharge our clients and neither do we unnecessarily exhort money from them. We also provide customer care to our clients.. Fourthly, our immigration officers/experts have considerable experience handling all the cases brought to us by our clients. Moreover, they are more than capable to assist them in preparing applications and appeals. We can also represent our clients for immigration interviews, courts and tribunals.
5What are your consultation fees?
We fix a fee for our services based on the complexity of the cases brought to us by our clients. Based on the kind of service you require, we out rightly provide you with a fee quote during the consultation session itself. Once fixed it is irrevocable. However we are not open for negotiation. We fix a price and you are required to pay. But rest assured that we are not overpriced. Our wages are fair and affordable. We are very flexible with time of payment. If you are eligible for legal aid, our services are at your disposal for free.
6Do I get a free consultation?
We believe no legal advice come free. If a law firm is offering you free consultation, it is most likely more of a sales pitch rather than legal advice. A good legal consultation progresses in the following stages: 30 minutes of taking your immigration history after which your legal officer will provide you with sound legal advice to your problems based on his vast experience. He will provide a detailed appraisal of your case including its strengths, its weaknesses, and your prospects of moving your case forward. At the end they should be able to give you a fixed fee amount. In short, after a legal consultation, you will be aware of the nature of your case, your options, your prospects of success, the time frame of completion and the cost for completion. If the ‘free’ consultation that you are getting is missing any of these points, it is just a sales pitch. If you are eligible for legal aid, our services are at your disposal for free.

9Why do I even need a lawyer or expert to help me?
This is a very important question that you need to ask yourself. Sometimes your case may be so trivial that you can fix it by slapping a Band-Aid on it yourself. But, be absolutely sure that it is easily fixable. If you have any gray areas that might possibly be beyond your skills to fix, don’t hesitate to bring in the big guns. Winging it with the help of friends and online forums is not an option. They will do you more harm than good. Nobody can replace a good lawyer when they are needed. If you can’t answer all of the following questions, then you need to either get the answer yourself or hire a specialist you can trust. Have you tried and succeeded in making a similar application before? Do you have sufficient time and knowledge to get all the paper work done correctly? Do you have the necessary information for making an appeal? What would you do if you have a previous failed application? How can you effectively work around your complex immigration history? How would you go about preparing an application not found in the rule book?
10What are the few points you need to look for when you talk to your immigration officer.
There are a few points you need to look for when you talk to your immigration officer. You need to figure out if you are talking to the right person who can handle your case, the time required for the entire process and the clarity of the information you provide to your officer. During the phone interview make sure that you get the following information: Get a complete picture of the issues and possible outcome of the case. If you do not understand a point, it is your rights to enquire. So don’t hesitate to ask questions for the fear of coming across as an ignorant. Remember you are not lawyer and or an immigration expert and you are not entitled to know all the aspects of your case. Please bear in mind that it might be some issues that may be even beyond the specialist to solve at the time of your call. There maybe some questions that they have to do further research on before they can make a sound judgement. They may require additional documentation, take it as a positive sign as there might be some relevant detail that they want to consider before proceeding with your case. Give special consideration to their fee policies as well. You should be aware what you are paying for and if they require payment upfront. You should have a clear inkling of their work quality and ethics: their communication skills, who will handle your case, a detailed plan of how they expect to win your case and their knowledge of relevant laws and rules to provide sufficient guidance. Do not solely rely on the confidence that your potential exudes. It is quite easy to fake. Rather look for knowledge profundity, enthusiasm and sincerity. Bear in mind that no lawyer has all the answers to every question. The law is very clear and transparent. You either know how to work it or you don’t. There is no guarded ’secret’ in immigration law. Every knowledge is easily verifiable. So when you are consulting a lawyer or expert, look for that verifiable knowledge which you can easily cross-check. This will help you sift the sand from stone about what your lawyer and advisor is telling you. It will also help you find out if your advisor truly knows his stuff.
11As a client, how can I ensure the success of my case?
Fear of the law and the legal system in general can sometimes bring the worst in the clients. This might sometimes hinder their case rather than help him. Here are a few things we request you keep in mind when consulting with your immigration lawyer. Honesty: Be completely honest with us. Lies and half-truths will get you nowhere. Remember, we are trying to help you and any information you may pass on to us will remain confidential and will not be used against you in court. Costs: Be aware of the cost of the entire process. Beware of information overload: You would have definitely heard that too many cooks spoil the broth. That’s what too much information does to you. Many times clients approach online forums, friends, family and other lawyers for opinions with their cases. Having way too many opinions can confuse and frighten you. It is more advisable to approach one or two experts that you trust with your problem. This will allow you to make a better decision. Culture: It would be wiser to pick a lawyer or advisor who is familiar with your culture, society and race and they may be more acquainted with where you are coming from and therefore can help you better. However, this is just a recommendation. Race or culture is never a barrier for a really good lawyer and, or a good advisor.
